13th Century Illuminated Manuscript
A 13th century illuminated manuscript, a breviary from the diocese of Salzburg was part of the Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek Aachen collection in Germany until it was bombed in 1943.
Missing until purchased on eBay by a UK collector who died in 2020. This work was offered for sale by the collector’s Estate in 2021 and flagged by a brilliant art historian in London.
Art Recovery International accepted the case pro-bono on behalf of the Aachen library and negotiated an unconditional release of the artwork. It’s being slipped into a German diplomatic pouch with other previously stolen (and now recovered) items being sent from the UK to Germany.
