Joan Mitchell, Untitled, 1983 Pastel on paper, 22 ¾ in. x 15 ½ in.

Stolen from a NYC art gallery in 2002, this Joan Mitchell work was identified when it was consigned for sale through one of the two major US auction houses.  The painting was being offered by a dealer who specialised in purchasing abandoned or unpaid storage units in bulk.  Apparently, the stolen painting had being stored in one of these units for years following the theft.

ARI’s Chris Marinello, acting on behalf of the gallery’s insurer, negotiated a complex and confidential settlement with the possessor.
