“Fantin-Latour” Recovered 36 Years After Theft
Aug 8, 2009
When is a Fantin-Latour not a Fantin-Latour? When it is not accepted into the catalogue raisonné. Not pictured, a painting purported to be by Henri Fantin-Latour was stolen from a top NYC gallery in 1973 and reported to the New York City Police Department and the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA).
The painting appeared for sale at an auction house in Connecticut and Chris Marinello was appointed to negotiate with the attorney for the consignor. When the sale estimate dropped from $150,000 to $25,000, an unconditional release was signed returning the painting to the gallery.
