Stolen Tiffany Glass Consigned to Auction House is Recovered
Aug 8, 2008
The victims are dealers in fine art glass specializing in Tiffany. In a bizarre twist, they noticed that glass vases that they recently purchased at Freeman’s Auction were actually stolen from their New York City shop in 1971!
Chris Marinello contacted Freeman’s and placed a hold on all transactions involving the consignor. The victims identified 16 lots from the same consignor that were part of the 1971 theft.
Marinello negotiated a release with the consignor and Freeman’s returned all but four lots which sold to overseas buyers or buyers who resold the works making further recovery impractical or prohibitively expensive. In these four instances, the sale proceeds were returned to the victims in lieu of the actual items.
